The weird Greater Scaup thing is still at Apex. Yesterday it was joined by a female Greater Scaup. I still think it looks small and the vermiculations look very coarse for a Greater Scaup - er, a bit like a
mariloides, the North American and Pacific race of Greater Scaup!

An early morning trip to Wales today for the Pacific Diver at Llys-y-fran Reservoir. It showed well but in poor light, and was highly mobile in a small area. Nice bird, but the reservoir looks just like Wimbleball, so can we have one on there please.

This Spotted Sandpiper at Lisvane Reservoir in Cardiff has been present all winter. I had a meeting in Cardiff today, so stopped in here on the way back. A few spots are present around the vent, though apparantly these have been visible for quite some time.

Suppose I should be grateful it isn't pis*ing down as predicted. This Black Redstart at Brean has evaded me until today when it was easy!

Yeahay, the sun came out for a few minutes today. This Sparrowhawk (top) and Kestrel (lower) took the opportunity to hunt along the southern side of Brean Down.

After some unnecessary initial confusion and head scratching (by me, I admit!) this first winter male Greater Scaup at Apex Lake, Burnham was not typical of the species, showing exceptionally well and occasionally coming to bread! Wild Pochard do this all the time at Apex, so this does not mean that it's of suspect origin.

It's not a good sign when you go to see a bird and you use your car headlights both on the way there and back! The light was truly dreadful today, but the Leigh on Mendip Cattle Egret did show well. Had it not been so dark these photos would have been much better. |
