Bird Guiding

My Equipment

I've always found it interesting to look on others' web sites and find out what gear they've used to take those photos I'm envious of.

I'm a birder who takes photos of birds that are silly enough to get in the way of me. I'm not a serious photographer, but I do appreciate good images, and am thankful when this (rarely) happens to me.

After a host of cameras and lenses I've ended up with a combination that seems to produce acceptable results (you can judge - the results are the recent images on this site). The following made me buy this set up:

  • The lens is superb. Pin sharp and fast focussing
  • The lens is quite light - you can actually carry it!
  • The 40D is a brilliant body.

Canon 40D 10mp Digital SLR (awesome; now I realise how crap the 350D was)

Canon 350D 8mp Digital SLR

Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens

Canon 100mm f2.8 macro plus lens hood

Kenko DG AF Pro 300 1.4x teleconverter with taped pins

Sigma 530 DG ST flash

Stofen Omni-bounce Diffuser

Flash X-tender

Many thanks to those who helped with camera advice, especially Martin Cade and Rich Andrews.
