This year is going to be less of a diary and more of an occasional highlights.

This Merveille du Jour is a spectacular moth, caught in the garden on 16 October 2006. A first for Berrow/Burnham although probably because it's usually difficult to find the right weather conditions to trap at this time of year.

vestal

The night of 23 September 2006 was good for immigrants. I trapped 2 Vestals (top), 3 Delicates (lower), 1 Small Mottled Willow, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Swordgrass, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw.

They keep coming in ones and twos. Immigrants that is! This Cosmopolitan on 12 September 2006 is only the second patch record, the first being one at Burnham just a few days ago.

Only of interest over the last week has been a handful of immigrants, although mostly more of the same. Four-spotted Footman, Scarce Bordered Straw, Pearly Underwing, Dark Swordgrass and Small Mottled Willow. Elsewhere in Burnham a better selection has included Vestal, Gem, Striped Hawk-moth, Cosmopolitan and White Speck. See here.

This male Anomalous was caught in the garden on 25 August 2006. It's the first Burnham/Berrow record.

More immigrants, but more of the same. Another Scarce Bordered Straw (left) and this time a male Four-spotted Footman. 8 August 2006. Notice how different this Scarce Bordered Straws looks from the darker one below.

Immigrants are coming in ones or twos. This Scarce Bordered Straw was in the garden trap on 7 August 2006.

Immigrants are still no more than a sprinkling, although of good quality. This Four-spotted Footman was in the garden trap on 5 August 2006.

With large numbers of immigrant moths on the south coast, it's not surprising that sooner on later a Ni Moth would turn up in the garden. This was a welcome garden first on 30 July 2006.

This summer has been productive for moths in the garden light trap. Above from top Blackneck; Scarlet Tiger and Leopard Moth are just a few that I photographed.

Another Cream-bordered Green Pea last night (30 June 2006), plus another Double-line. Another Bordered Straw the night before last. All good moths, but I could do with something new!

The run of good moths continues. On the 28 June 2006 I trapped a Striped Hawk-moth (above lower image) , Double-line (above tope image) , European Corn-borer and The Gothic amongst a good selection of the more regular species.

This is a quality new garden species, a Cream-bordered Green Pea. Following one recorded at light at Berrow LNR last year by a visiting mother, we caught another a few weeks ago. This one in my garden was a great surprise (27 June 2006).

Another migrant, this time a Bordered Straw on 14 June 2006. A couple of others have been caught in Burnham this week.

These two European Core Borers were the highlight of a busy night for the moth trap on the evening of 11 June 2006. This species used to be an exceptionally rare migrant. Now it's less so with a couple of previous records from Berrow.
