Local Patch Birding

Not entirely due to chance I live in probably one of the best birding areas in Somerset. Somerset might not have the same reputation for turning up rare birds as other counties in the south-west, but lets face it, I could live in an inland county and get excited by anything that isn't the usual selection found on garden feeders!

To make sure respect is acknowledged, any mention of local patch birding in the Berrow and Burnham area must pay regard to the Slades, who between father and son have spent many years and hours tramping their patch, often finding their due rewards.

Andy and Wendy Slades Birds' and Moths of Burnham on Sea web site can be found here, and has some great information on the area.

I'm a relative newcomer, but hope I can offer some additional details on the best sites in the area.

This is a map of the area. The bit I consider to be my local patch is the coastal area between the River Axe in the north and The Brue in the south. This area covers the following sites - click on them for some more details:

(1) The Axe Estuary (2) Brean Down (3) Berrow and Brean Beaches (4) Berrow Dunes (5) Burnham and Berrow Golf Course (6) Burnham on Sea Seafront (7) The Brue Estuary (8) Apex Park.
